Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ difficulties in writing compound sentence in simple past tense at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The number of population members was 51 students. The researcher used total sampling technique to select the sample and the total number of sample members was 51 students. The instrument used to get the data was writing sentence test. The students were asked to write 28 compound sentence in simple past tense: 14 positive sentences, 14 negative sentences. It was found that the reliability index of the test was very high 0.87 (see Appendix 9). It means that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity. The result of this research showed that in general the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had difficulties in writing compound sentence in simple past tense. It was proved by the finding that 28 students 54.9% (see Appendix 7) had difficulties and 23 students  45.1% (see Appendix 7) had no difficulties. In detail, 23 students  45.1% (see Appendix 10) had difficulties and 28 students  54.9% (see Appendix 10) had no difficulties to write first clause in affirmative compound sentence, 32 students  62.7% (see appendix 11) had difficulties and 19 students  37.3% (see Appendix 11) had no difficulties to write second clause in affirmative compound sentence, 25 students  49.0% (see Appendix 12) had difficulties and 26 students  51.0% (see Appendix 12) had no difficulties to write first clause in negative compound sentence, 27 students  52.9% (see Appendix 13) had difficulties and 24 students  47.1% (see Appendix 13) had no difficulties to write second clause in negative compound sentence, 33 students  64.7% (see Appendix 14) had difficulties and 18 students  35.3% (see Appendix 14) had no difficulties to write coordinating conjunction in affirmative compound sentence and 28 students  54.9% (see Appendix 15) had difficulties and 23 students  45.1% (see Appendix 15) had no difficulties to write compound sentence in simple past tense. Referring to the result of this research, the researcher concluded that the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University have difficulties in writing compound sentence in simple past tense. Dealing with the conclusion, the researcher suggested to the lecturers to explain and give more exercise about the kind of sentence, especially in compound sentence. The students are suggested to study harder and learn more about compound sentence especially in writing second clause in affirmative and negative form. The further researchers are expected to find and analyze the factors which cause the students had difficulties in writing compound sentence in simple past tense
