Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ ability in identifying independent clause and dependent clause in complex sentence using adverb clause at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Specifically, it aimed at describing the students’ ability in identifying independent clause and dependent adverb clause of condition, contrast, purpose, reason and time in complex sentence. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was 54 students of the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University who have passed Structure I, II, II and IV, but there was one student who did not participated in this research because she was absent when the researcher did her research. In selecting the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique. The number of sample was 53 students. The result of the data analysis showed that the ability of the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in identifying independent clause and dependent clause in complex sentence using adverb clause were classified into having moderate ability. It was proved by the fact that 20 students from 53 students (38%) had moderate ability. Based on the result of data analysis the researcher suggested that English lecturers should use a creative strategy in teaching independent clause and dependent clause to the students. The lecturers are also suggested to give more exercises to the students about identifying independent clause and dependent clause in complex sentence using adverb clause. The researcher also suggested the students to pay attentions to lessons and do more exercises about identifying independent clause and dependent clause in complex sentence using adverb clause of condition, contrast, purpose, reason and time
