Abstract

This research was aimed to find out a correlation between students’ reading habit and their vocabulary mastery toward their reading comprehension of second year students’ of English Department of Bung Hatta University. The hypothesis of this research was that whether there was a positive significant correlation between students’ reading habit and their vocabulary mastery toward their reading comprehension of second year students’ of English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population was 45 students. The researcher used simple random sampling technique. To choose the sample, the researcher took it randomly. The researcher gathered the data by using questionnaire, vocabulary test and reading test. To analyze the data the researcher used the Person Product Moment Formula and Double Correlation Formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that, the reading habit of second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University was moderate (57%), their vocabulary mastery was moderate (37%) and their reading comprehension was good (53%). For the coefficient correlation, first the value of coefficient correlation between students’ reading habit and their reading comprehension was positive (r counted 0.45 > r table 0.36). Second, the value of coefficient correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension was positive (r counted 0.94 > r table 0.36). Third, the value of coefficient of correlation between students’ reading habit and their vocabulary mastery toward their reading comprehension was positive (f counted 102.74 > 3.35 f table) α 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) n-k-1 (27). Therefore, the relationship between three variables, reading habit, vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension was significant. It means that the alternative hypothesis stating “there is a significant correlation between students reading habit and their vocabulary mastery toward their reading comprehension of second year students’ of English Department of Bung Hatta University” was accepted. It can be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ reading habit and their vocabulary mastery toward their reading comprehension of second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University.
