Abstract

This research was aimed at describing the Second Year students’ Ability in Understanding References in Paragraph at English Department of Bung Hatta. The design of this researcher was descriptive. The population of this research was the second year students’ at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population members of this research was 48 students, and they were divided into two classes. The researcher used simple random sampling technique to select sample and the number of the sample member was 24 students’. The data were gathered by reading test in the form of multiple choices given to the students’. Before researcher did the real test, she had tried out it to see reliability. The result of try out showed that reliability of the test was 0.63 (see appendix 8). It means that, the test was reliable. The researcher presented multiple choices test was the instrument in this research. For the real test the researcher used 26 items, consisted of 7 items of personal reference, 9 items of demonstrative reference, 10 items comparative reference. The researcher presented raw score, the researcher used Person Product Moment formula and Spearman Brown formula to find reliability of the test, and then calculated the students’ score, classified the students who got very good, good, moderate, bad ability. Generally, the result of the research showed that the ability of the second year students’ at English Department of Bung Hatta University in understanding reference in paragraph was good. It was indicated by the fact that 15 students’ (62.5%) who got good ability (see appendix 13). Then, the ability in understanding personal reference in paragraph was very good. It was indicated by the fact that 10 students’ (41.7%) who got very good ability (see appendix 15). Then, the ability in understanding demonstrative reference in paragraph was good. It was indicated by the fact that 13 students’ (54.17%) who got good ability (see appendix 17). Then, the ability in understanding comparative reference in paragraph was bad. It was indicated by the fact that 12 students (50%) who got bad ability (see appendix 19). Based on the result above, a simple suggestion could be drawn. The lecturer should try to keep their ability and give more attention and motivation for them in understanding references in paragraph
