Abstract

This research was aimed at describing the second year students’ ablity in pronouncing fricative consonants at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive in nature. The number of population members was 51 students. The researcher used simple random sampling technique to choose the sample. The instrument used to get the data was oral pronunciation test. The researcher used interjudge reliability. It was found that the reliability index of the test in the form of pronouncing fricative consonants was very high (.94). It means that the instrument is reliable. Generally, the result of the data analysis in pronouncing fricative consonants showed that53.85% students had good ability inpronouncing fricative consonants. Specifically, 73.08% of students had good ability in pronouncing voiceless labiodental fricative consonant sound /f/, 46.15% of students had very good ability in pronoucing voiced labiodental ficative consonant sound /v/, 46.15% of students had good ability in pronouncing voiceless interdental fricative consonant sound /θ/, 50% of students had very good ability in pronouncing voiced interdental fricative consonant sound /ð/, 73.08% of students had very good ability in pronouncing voiceless alveolar fricative consonanant sound /s/, 50% of students had very good ability in pronouncing voiced alveolar fricative consonant sound /z/, 38.46% of students had very good ability in pronouncing voiceless alveopalatal fricative consonant sound /ʃ/, 42.30% of students had moderate ability in pronouncing voiced alveopalatal fricative consonant sound /Ʒ/, and 84.61% of students had very good ability in pronouncing glottal fricative consonant sound /h/. Based on the finding of this study, a simple conclusion could be drawn that the students were able to pronounce some fricative consonant sounds correctly (/f/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /h/) and they were unable to pronounce /Ʒ/. It is suggested that the students practice fricative consonant sounds more, specifically for unfamiliar fricative consonant sounds. Besides the lecturer should give more oral drills in producing fricative consonants, specifically unfamiliar fricative consonants to the students.
