Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the comprehension of the third year students in Bung Hatta University in comprehending unfamiliar words in newspaper articles of Jakarta Post. The researcher used simple random sampling technique to get representative sample. The total number of sample was 22 students. The instruments used to get the data was reading test. The researcher found the reliability of the test was high (0,79). It means test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in content validity. The result of the data analysis showed that the students’ comprehension of unfamiliar words in newspaper articles of Jakarta Post was very good. It is proved that 71.88% of students’ had very good comprehension in comprehending unfamiliar words, 15.63% of students had good comprehension, 6.25% had moderate comprehension and 6.25% of students had bad comprehension in comprehending unfamiliar words. In comprehending unfamiliar words in newspaper articles of Jakarta Post through example clues, 50% of students had very good comprehension, 37.5% of students had good comprehension, 0% of students had moderate comprehension and 12.5% of students had bad comprehension. In comprehending unfamiliar words in newspaper articles of Jakarta Post through definition clues, 34.30% of students had very good comprehension, 56.25% of students had good comprehension, 0% of students had moderate comprehension and 6.25% of students had bad comprehension. In students comprehension of unfamiliar words in newspaper article of Jakarta Post through contrast clues, 56.25% of students had very good comprehension, 18.75% of students had good comprehension, 15.63% of students had moderate comprehension and 9.40% of students bad comprehension. 73 Since the students’ comprehension of unfamiliar words in newspaper article of Jakarta Post was very good, the researcher suggests to English lecturers of English Department, Bung Hatta University to give more questions and exercise to the students’ about unfamiliar words. For the students, they are suggested to learn more and did more exercises of understanding unfamiliar words through context clues. The researcher suggests to the next researcher to find out the students’ problem in comprehend unfamiliar words. Key words: Reading comprehension, unfamiliar words, newspaper articles.
