Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out the ability of the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in writing question tags in present perfect tense. The design of this research was descriptive. The number of population members of this research was 54 students. They were divided into two classes. The researcher used total sampling technique to describe the ability of the students. The instrument of collecting data was writing test. In this test, the students were required to write 20 sentences using provided phrases in the form of question tags in present perfect tense. In general, this study found that the third year students’ ability at English Department of Bung Hatta University in writing question tags in present perfect tense was very good (57.41%). In specific, their ability in writing question tags in affirmative form of nominal sentence in present perfect tense was very good (79.63%), their ability in writing question tags in affirmative form of verbal sentence in present perfect tense was very good (61.11%), their ability in writing question tags in negative form of nominal sentence in present perfect tense was very good (77.78%), and their ability in writing question tags in negative form of verbal sentence was very good (57.41%). The findings of this research leads the researcher to conclude that the ability of the third year students in writing question tags in present perfect tense at English Department of Bung Hatta University was very good. Based on the conclusion, the researcher gives suggestion for the lecturers, students, and the next researchers. The researcher suggests the lecturers to give more explanation to review the material about present perfect tense, mechanism in writing sentence, tag question’s writing, nominal and verbal sentences’ writing, and to give more exercises in order to improve the students’ ability in writing question tags in present perfect tense. For students, the researcher suggests them to do more exercises to write question tags in present perfect tense in order to maintain their capability in writing question tags in present perfect tense, in writing nominal and verbal sentence, and to pay attention to the mechanism of writing sentence (capitalization, spelling, and punctuation). At last, the researcher suggests the next researcher to do another research. For example: in writing question tags in simple past tense.
