Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe the eleventh grade students’ ability in writing a paragraph about future plans at SMAN 01 Mukomuko, Bengkulu. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students at SMAN 01 Mukomuko, Bengkulu. The total number of population was 217 students, and they were distributed into seven classes: class X1 MIA 1, X1 MIA 2, X1 MIA 3, X1 MIA 4, XI IIS 1, XI IIS 2, XI IIS 3. The researcher used stratified cluster random sampling technique to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 60. In collecting data, the researcher used writing test. The researcher asked students to write a paragraph about their future plans based on their own topic. The researcher only measured the ability of the eleventh grade students’ writing a paragraph about future plans by considering four components of writing: (content, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics). In analyzing the data, the researcher did several steps. Firstly, she presented the raw score of each sample, calculated average score (M), and standard deviation (SD), classified the students who got high to low ability, and counted the percentage of them. Based on the result of data analysis, it was indicated that the eleventh grade students’ ability in writing a paragraph about future plans at SMAN 01 Mukomuko, Bengkulu in general was moderate. It was proved by the evidence that 74.34 % of them could write a paragraph about future plans. There were 80 % students who were classified into moderate criteria in expressing ideas (content) in writing a paragraph about future plans, 68.33 % students classified into moderate criteria in using correct grammar in writing a paragraph about future plans, 70 % students classified into moderate criteria in using appropriate vocabulary in writing a paragraph about future plans, and 66.67 % students classified into moderate criteria in using mechanics in writing a paragraph about future plans. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that the eleventh grade students’ ability in writing a paragraph about future plans was moderate. Relating to this conclusion, she suggests English teachers to consider proportionally the four components of writing: content, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics in teaching writing. In addition, English teachers are suggested to provide more iv practices f on those components of writing. The students are suggested to do more practices to express their ideas in writing English.
