Abstract

This research aimed at describing the students’ errors in translating descriptive text from English to Indonesian at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the fourth year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population members of this research was 114 students. They were divided into three classes: A, B, and C. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique, and the number of the sample members was 20 students. The instrument used to get the data was a translation test. The time given was 60 minutes. To find the reliability, this research used interrater method. It means that there were two scorers and it was found that the reliability index of this test was .89 based on the result. In analyzing the data based on the result of translation test, the researcher counted the percentage of students who had errors. Finally, the researcher drew the conclusion. If the number of students who had errors was more than 50%, they were simply considered to have errors. However, if the number of students who had errors was less than or similar with 50%, they were considered to have no errors. The result of data analysis, showed that the students’ had no errors. It was proved by the fact that there were 0% students who had errors in syntactic aspect. Then, there were 35% students who had errors in referential meaning. Finally, there were 0% students who had errors in organizational. Referring to the result of this study, the researcher suggests the students to improve their ability in translation especially in syntactic aspect and semantic aspect by doing more exercises and practicing translation subject. In semantic aspect, the students should have more vocabulary to find appropriate meaning. In syntactic aspect the students should improve their grammar ability to make the sentence more acceptable by the reader. The lecturers should give the students more exercises and develop their method, strategy and teaching material in translation subject especially in translating descriptive text from English to Indonesian.
