Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out ability of the fourth year students of English Department, the Faculty of Teacher Training and education at Bung Hatta University in translating news text from Indonesian into English. The population of this research was the fourth year English Department students at Bung Hatta University Padang. The total number of population of this research was 83 students and the number of sample was 20 students. It was chosen by using simple random sampling technique to get representative sample. The instrument used to get the data was translation test. To know the reliability of the test, the researcher used inter-rater technique. The test was reliable, since the value of r-calculated (.94) was higher than the value of r-table (.44). From the result of analyzing the data in translating news text, the researcher foundthat there were 2 students (10%) who had high ability, 16 students (80%) who had moderate ability and 2 students (10%) who had low ability (see Appendix 7-8). Specifically, in translating news text in terms of lexical equivalence, there were 2 students (10%) who had high ability, 17 students (85%) who had moderate ability and 1 student (5%) who had low ability (see Appendix 11-12). And in translating news text in term of grammatical adjustment, there were 2 students (10%) who had high ability, 16 students (80%) who had moderate ability and 2 students (10%) who had low ability (see Appendix 15-16). Referring to the result of this study, the researcher suggests the students to improve their ability in translating especially in terms of lexical equivalence and grammatical adjustment by doing more exercises and practicing translation. It is expected that the lecturers give the students more exercises to improve their vocabulary mastery, and to add their knowledge about the rules in grammar. Translation lecturers also should develop their teaching materials to increase students‟ ability in translating. For further researchers, it is suggested to do other translation researches to find out another aspect in translating news text from Indonesian into English.
