Abstract

Grammar as a language component has an important role in language teaching, so it must be learned by students because it is a very basic knowledge for student in learning English. There are many aspects discussed in English grammar; one of them is reported speech. Learning reported speech is not easy for many Indonesian students because of significant differences in grammatical form between English and Indonesian. This research was aimed to describe the grammatical errors made by the second year students of SMA Negeri 7 Sijunjung in transforming reported speech. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the second year students of SMA Negeri 7 Sijunjung. The number of the population members was 162 students. They were divided into two strata and distributed into two Exact science classes and four Social science classes. The number of sample members was 50 students from both XI Exact science 1 class and XI social science 3 class. The researcher used stratified cluster random sampling in taking the sample. In collecting data, the researcher used grammar test. The researcher used inter-rater technique to find the reliability of the test. It was found that the reliability index of the test was .98 (see Appendix 4). It means that the test was highly reliable. The result of data analysis showed that the total of errors identified in transforming direct speech into indirect speech was 591 errors. They were divided into 280 of noun phrase errors, 292 of verb phrase errors, and 19 of word order errors (see Appendix 5). 47,38% of errors were noun phrase errors (see Appendix 6), 49,4% of errors were verb phrase errors (see Appendix 7), and 3,22% of errors were word order errors (see Appendix 8). There were 178,5 errors (see Appendix 9) or 30,2% of the total errors made by students in transforming direct speech into indirect speech in present tense (see Appendix 10), 192,5 errors (see Appendix 14) or 32,57% of the total errors made by students in transforming direct speech into indirect speech in past tense (see Appendix 15), 133,5 errors (see Appendix 19) or 22,59% of the total errors made by students in transforming direct speech into indirect speech in future tense (see Appendix 20), and 86,5 errors (see Appendix 24) or 14,64% of the total errors made by students in transforming direct speech into indirect speech in present perfect tense (see Appendix 25). The most grammatical errors in reported speech made by the second year students of SMA Negeeri 7 Sijunjung were verb phrase errors in transforming direct speech into indirect speech in past tense. The less grammatical errors in reported speech made by the second year students of SMA Negeri 7 Sijunjung were word order errors in transforming direct speech into indirect speech in present perfect tense. The teachers are suggested to pay attention to the grammar when they teach about reported speech especially in transforming direct speech into indirect speech in past tense and find appropriate strategy to minimize the students’ errors. The students should study the rules on reported speech in the correct form and practice more about it. The researcher suggests other researchers to find out the causes of errors made by the students in transforming reported speech.
