Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ interest and their reading habits toward comprehending hortatory exposition text at SMAN 5 Padang. The hypothesis of this research was there is a significant correlation between students’ interest and their reading habit toward comprehending hortatory exposition text at SMAN 5 Padang. The number of population members was 307 students. There were distributed into nine classes; XII IPA 1, XII IPA 2, XII IPA 3, XII IPA 4, XII IPA 5,XII IPS 1, XII IPS 2, XII IPS 3, XII IPS 4, and XII IPS 5 .The researcher took two classes as sample by using stratified cluster random sampling technique. The classes selected as sample were classes XII IPA 2 and XII IPS 1. The researcher gathered the data by using interview, two questionnaire to measure students’ interest and reading habits, and reading test to measure students’ ability to comprehend text. To analyze the data the researcher used the Person Product Moment Formula and Double Correlation Formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that value of coefficient of three variables was 0.79 and f- counted was 89.15 (α 0.05) and the degree of freedom (df) n-k-1 (59), value of f- table was 3.15 (see appendix 32). It means that f- counted (89.15) was bigger than f- table (3.15). Therefore, the relationship between three variables, students’ interest, reading habits and ability to comprehend text was significant. It means that the alternative hypothesis that said “there is a significant correlation between students’ interest and their reading habits toward comprehending hortatory exposition text at SMAN 5 Padang” was accepted. Learning from the result, it can be concluded that the correlation between students’ interest and their reading habits toward their comprehending hortatory exposition text was high. It can be concluded that students’ interest influence ability to comprehend hortatory exposition text, and reading habit can influence their ability to comprehend hortatory exposition text. Because of that, teachers should consider these both aspects in teaching and learning process, especially reading hortatory exposition text. 6 TABL
