Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in understanding arrticles. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the first year students at Bung Hatta University. The total number of the population member was 38 students. They were distributed into two classes. The researcher took one class as the sample. So, The researcher used cluster random sampling to select the sample. For collecting data, the researcher used grammar test. The researcher found the reliability of the test was very high (0.87) (see Appendix E). It means test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in content validity. The result of analysis showed that the students‟ ability in Understanding articles was moderate ability. It was proved that 83.33% students had moderate ability (see Appendix N). In detail, the students‟ ability in understanding definite articles (the) was moderate. It was proved that 61.11% students had moderate ability (see Appendix Q). The students‟ ability in understanding indefinite articles (a) was moderate. It was proved that 55.55% students had moderate ability (see Appendix T). The students‟ ability in understanding indefinite articles (an) was moderate. It was proved that 66.67% students had moderate ability (see Appendix W). And the students‟ ability in understanding omission articles (Ø) iv was moderate. It was proved that 55.55% students had moderate ability (see Appendix Z) Based on the result above, the researcher suggests to the lecturers to give more question and explanation to the students about articles. For the students, the researcher suggests to learn more about articles and to do more exercises about articles. The researcher suggests to the next researcher to find out the students problem in understanding articles.
