Abstract
The objective of this research was to describe the difficulties faced by the second year students at Bung Hatta University in writing simple sentence in present perfect tense. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the second year students academic year 2014/2015 and the total number of the population members was 49 students. They were distributed into two classes, class A 24 students and class B 25 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique and class B had been chosen to be the sample of this research. To gather the data, the researcher used writing sentence test. The researcher limited her research on difficulties in writing affirmative sentence, writing negative sentence, yes / no question, and information question. The result of analyzing the data showed that the the researcher found out; 68 % students had difficulties, 32% students had no difficulties in writing simple sentence in present perfect tense affirmative sentence, 56 % students had difficulties 44% students had no difficulties in writing negative sentense, 56 % students had difficulties 44 % students had no difficulties in writing yes / no question, and 64 % students had difficulties 36 % students had no difficulties in writing information question in simple present perfect tense. The researcher suggests the lecturer to give more exercises in writing information question since the result showed that most students (64%) had difficulties in writing information question. The students are also suggested to pay more attention and do more exercise in writing information question for the result of this research showed that more number of students (64%) had difficulties in writing information question in present perfect. Futhormore, for the another researcher to can more carefully check answer sheets’s students when the research about present perfect. Additional in grammar (V3), be, adverb of time in present perfect.
