Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ motivation and background knowledge toward reading comprehension on narrative text at the second grade of SMAN 1 Tigo Nagari Pasaman. The hypothesis of this research was there was a significant correlation between students’ motivation and background knowledge toward their reading comprehension on narrative text at the second grade of SMAN 1 Tigo Nagari Pasaman. The number of population was 174 students. There were distributed into five classes; XI MIA 1, XI MIA 2, XI IIS 1, XI IIS 2 and XI IIS 3. The researcher took two classes as sample by using stratified cluster random sampling technique. The classes selected as sample were classes XI MIA 2 and XI IIS 1. The researcher gathered the data by using questionnaire to measure students’ motivation, background knowledge test to measure students’ background knowledge and reading test to measure students’ ability to comprehend text. To analyze, the data the researcher used the Person Product Moment Formula and Double Correlation Formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the value of coefficient of three variables was 0.35 and f- counted was 5.37 (α 0.05) and the degree of freedom (df) n-k-1 (57), value of f- table was 3.15 (see appendix 30). It means that f- counted (5.37) was bigger that f- table (3.15). Therefore, the relationship between three variables, motivation, background knowledge and ability to comprehend was significant. It means that the alternative hypothesis stating “there is a significant correlation between students’ motivation and background knowledge toward reading comprehension on narrative text at the second grade of SMAN 1 Tigo Nagari Pasaman” was accepted. Learning from the result, there was a significant between students’ motivation and background knowledge toward reading comprehension on narrative text at the second grade of SMAN 1 Tigo Nagari Pasaman. It can be concluded that motivation less influence students’ ability to comprehend narrative text, and background knowledge can influence their ability to comprehend narrative text. Because of that, teachers should consider these both aspects in teaching and learning process, especially reading narrative text.
