Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ grammatical errors in writing short paragraph about future plan at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The number of population members was 56 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling to select the sample and the total number of sample members was 28 students. The instrument used to get the data was writing subjective test. The students were asked to write short paragraph about future plan. It was found that the reliability index of the test was very high correlation (0.99). It means that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity (see Appendix 5). The results of this research showed that in general, the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta Univerity made grammatical errors in writing short paragraph about future plan. It was proved by the finding that 24 (86%) had errors and 4 students (14%) had no error. In detail, 13 students (46%) made omission error and 15 students (54%) did not make error in the form of omission (see Appendix 6), 10 students (36%) made addition error and 18 students (64%) did not make error in the form of addition (see Appendix 7), 3 students (11%) made misordering error and 25 students (89%) did not make error in the form of misordering (see Appendix 8), 5 students (18%) made misinformation error and 23 students (82%) did not make error in the form of misinformation(see Appendix 9). Referring to the result of this research, the researcher concluded that the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University had made grammatical errors in writing short paragraph about future plan. Dealing with the conclusion, the researcher suggested to the lecturers to explain and give more exercises about making a good paragraph. The students are suggested to study harder and learn more about making a good paragraph, especially in writing plural form, article and be form of a short paragraph about future plan. The researcher assumed that the types of grammatical errors which made by the students caused by the influence of the first language and second language of the students. The students have not ever studied about writing plural form, article and be form in their first language and second language. That is why, most of the students had grammatical error in writing plural form, article and be form
