Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the ability of the third year students’ at English Department of Bung Hatta University in translating news item text. The population of this reseach was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of the research was descriptive. The member of the population was 56 students. The reseacher took 27 students (class A) as the sample. In selecting sample, the reseacher used cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to get the data was translation test in the form of writing test. The researcher found the reliability of the test by using inter-rater technique. It was found that the coefficient correlation was very high (.85). It means that the result of the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in terms of content validity. The result of data analysis revealed that the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had moderate ability in translating news item text. Specifically, the students ability to adjusting lexical equivalence in translating news item text was moderate. It was indicated by the fact that 17 students (62,96%) had moderate ability. The students abilty to adjusting grammatical adjustment in translating news item text was moderate. It was indicated by the fact that 23 students (85,18%) had moderate ability. By having known that the students’ ability in translating news item text was moderate, the researcher gives suggestions to lecturer, the students and the further researcher. The studenst are suggested to increase and master their vocabulary more. For the lecturers, they are should pay attention to the students’ ability in translation, especially in using lexical equivalence and grammatical adjustment.For the further researcher, it is suggested to do other translation researches, especially to find out the students’ understanding or difficulty in translating news item text from English into Indonesian.
