Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out ability of the first year students of SMKN 5 Padang in writing a descriptive paragraph.The population of this research was the first grade students at SMKN 5 Padang. The total number of population members of this research was 120 students. The target population was Mechanic Major students. The number of sample was 30 students. It was chosen by using cluster random sampling technique to get representative sample. The instrument used to get the data was writing test in the form of writing a descriptive paragraph on tools and equipment based on pictures. Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher found the reliability index of the test was .90. It means that the test was reliable. From the result of analyzing the data the researcher found that in general, the students’ writing ablity was moderate. It was proved by the data that there were 3 students (10%) classified as high ability, 24 students (80%) classified as moderate ability, and 3 students (10%) classified as low ability. In terms of writing the content of descriptive paragraph, there were 3 students (10%) who got high ability, 26 students (86.7%) who got moderate ability, 1 students (3.3%) who got low ability. In terms of writing the identification of descriptive paragraph, there were 3 students (10%) who got high ability, 27 students (90%) who got moderate ability, 0 student (0%) who got low ability . In terms of writing the description of descriptive paragraph, there were 0 student (0%) who got high ability, 29 students (96.7%) who got moderate ability, 1 student (3.3%) who got low ability. In terms of language features in writing a descriptive paragraph, there were 8 students (26.7%) who got high ability, 22 students (73.3%) who got moderate ability, 0 student (0%) who got low ability. In terms of vocabulary in writing a descriptive paragraph, there were 3 students (10%) who got high ability, 22 students (73.3%) who got moderate ability, 5 students (16.7%) who got low ability. In terms of mechanics in writing a descriptive paragraph, there were 5 students (16.7%) who got high ability, 20 students (66.6%) who got moderate ability, 5 students (16.7%) who got low ability. Finally, based on the findings, it can be concluded that the first grade students ability in writing a descriptive paragraph on tools and equipment based on pictures was moderate. Related to the findings, the students are suggested to do more practices in writing descriptive paragraphs by paying attention to those aspects or components of descriptive paragraph. The English teachers are suggested to make the students more active in writing descriptive paragraphs. iv Further researchers are suggested to do further researches on other topics of monolog text and other media in order to improve students’ writing ability.
