Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University in Reading Aloud. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the Second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total of number of population members of this research was 50 students and the members of population are distributed in groups (classes). The number of sample members was 26 students. It was chosen by cluster random sampling technique to get representative sample. The instrument of this research was test. The reliability index of the test was 0.86 (Appendix 4).. Based on the result of analyzing the data, it was found the students’ ability in reading aloud was moderate. It was indicated by the fact that the majority of the students had moderate in fluency and pronunciation, but got low in intonation. there were 65.38% students who had moderate ability in fluency, 65.38%students who had moderate ability in pronunciation, and 65.38% students who had low ability in intonation (Appendix 8). Referring to the findings of this study, that the ability of the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta in reading aloud was moderate, she suggests the lecturers is expected to create sufficient drills in teaching how to read with good fluency, pronunciation and intonation correcly, in purpose of improving students’ ability in reading aloud.The students should do more drills on reading aloud because reading aloud is the activity using loud and clear voice for building student knowledge or improving student comprehension them to read.The next researchers are suggested to do a research on factors making students got difficulties to read aloud and to use this research finding as reference in conducting it
