Abstract
This study aimed to find out the errors made by the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in writing compound complex sentences. The fourth year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University was the population of this research. Total number of the population was 113. The researcher took 31 students (class A) as sample in this research. In selecting sample, the researcher used cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to get the data was writing test (see Appendix 1). The researcher found the reliability of the test by using inter-rater method. It was found that the coefficient correlation was very high (.83). lt means that the the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in terms of content validity. The data of this study were the fourth year students’ grammatical errors in writing compound complex sentences. The result showed that the students made four types of grammatical errors. They were omission, addition, misformation and misordering. It was proved by fact that there were 190 grammatical errors that students made. Specifically, there were 91 (47.89%) errors in omission, 54 (28.42%) errors in addition, 41 (21.58%) errors in misformation, and 4 (2.11%) errors in misordering. Based on the conclusions above, the researcher gives suggestion to both teacher and students. It is better to give more atention and explanation to the students and knowing causes of students’ grammatical errors in writing. The students should know the reasons why they learn English grammar and how important grammar for their writing skill, so they should study hard, because grammar is the main rule that should be mastered by the students especially in writing.
