Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the ability of the third year students’ ability in translating narrative text in the aspect of functional and textual adequacy, target language, non-specialized content, and specialized content and terminology. The design of this research was descriptive. The number of population members were 56 students, and the sample members were 28 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling in choosing sample. The instrument used in this research was translation test, and reliability index of the test was 0.94. The result of the data analysis in students’ ability in translating narrative text in general showed that 21 students (75%) had moderate ability. Spesifically, the result of the research showed that: (1) The students’ ability in the aspect of functional and textual adequacy, 0 students had high ability (0%), 23 students had moderate ability (82.14%), 5 students had low ability (17.86%); (2) 3 students (10.7%) had high ability, 24 students (85.71%) had moderate ability, 1 students (3.57%) had low ability in translating narrative text from English into Indonesian text in the aspect of target language; (3) 2 students (7.14%) had high ability, 25 students (89.3%) had moderate ability, 1 students had low ability (3.57%) in translating narrative text from English into Indonesian test in the aspect of non-specialized content (meaning); (4) 2 students (7.14%) had high ability, 19 students (67.85%) had moderate ability, 7 students (25%) had low ability in translating narrative text from English into Indonesian text in the aspect of specialized content and terminology. Based on the result of this research, the lecturers are suggested to improve their teaching learning process and give more exercises in translating narrative text. The students are expected to learn more about narrative text and do more exercises on it to improve their translation skill. And for the further researcher are suggested to conduct on factor making students have problem the students’ ability in translating narrative text from English into Indonesian.
