Abstract

The aimed of this research was to find out the third year students’ ability of English Department, Bung Hatta University to make inferences in reading short story. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the third year students of English Department, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Bung Hatta University. They were distributed into two classes. The researcher took one class as the sample using cluster random sampling. For collecting data, the researcher used reading test that consisted 26 items as instrumentation. The result of data analysis showed that the students’ ability to make inferences in short story was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 68.18% students had moderate ability. In detail, the students’ ability to infer the conflict in short story was moderate. It was proved that 68.18% students had moderate ability. The students’ ability to infer the point of view in short story was moderate. It was proved that 68.18% students had moderate ability. And the students’ ability to infer the theme in short story was moderate. It was proved that 54.55% students had moderate ability. Based on the result above, the researcher concludes that students’ ability to make inferences was moderate and suggests the lecturers to review the teaching material and give more exercises about inferences. For the students, the researcher suggests to learn more and to do more exercises about inferences of any text. Keywords: Reading, Ability in Reading, Inference, Short Story
