Abstract

The goal of this research was to find out the correlation between students’ grammatical mastery and their reading comprehension toward their translation appropriateness of English Text into Indonesian at the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population was 56 students. There were distributed into two classes; A and B. The researcher took a class as sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The selected class as sample was class B. The researcher gathered the data by using grammar test to measure students’ grammar mastery, reading to measure students’ reading comprehension and translation test to measure students’ translation appropriateness of English text into Indonesian.. To analyze the data the researcher used the Person Product Moment Formula and Double Correlation Formula. The result of analysis showed that 66.70% students had moderate ability in grammar (see Appendix 22), 63.89% students had moderate ability in reading (see Appendix 26) and 69.44% students had moderate appropriateness in translation (see Appendix 33). The coefficient correlation index between students’ grammatical mastery and their translation appropriateness of English text into Indonesian and between students’ reading comprehension and their translation appropriateness of English text into Indonesian and between students’ grammatical mastery and their reading comprehension was 0.73, 0.74 and 0.97 respectively. (see Appendix 35, 36 and 37). And the researcher found that the value of coefficient of three variables was 0.74 and f counted was 16.50 (α 0.05) and the degree of freedom (df) n-k-1 (33), value of f- table was 3.27. It means that f counted (16.50) was bigger that f table (3.27). Therefore, the relationship between three variables, grammatical mastery, reading comprehension and translation appropriateness of English text into Indonesian was significant. It means that the alternative hypothesis stating “there is a significant correlation between students’ grammatical mastery and their reading comprehension toward their translation appropriateness of English Text into Indonesian at the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University” was accepted. Learning from the result, it can be concluded that the grammatical mastery and their reading comprehension can influence their translation appropriateness of English Text into Indonesian. Based on the result above, the researcher suggests to the lecturers review the teaching material and give more exercises about grammar, reading and translation. For the students, the researcher suggests to learn more and to do more exercises about grammar, reading and translation.
