Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the second year students’ grammatical errors in telling unforgettable experience at MTsN Durian Tarung Padang. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The number of population members was 197 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling to select the sample and the total number of sample members was 32 students. The instrument used to get the data was speaking test. The students were asked to tell their unforgettable experience. It was found that the reliability index of the test was .93. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity. The result of this research showed that the average of the students who had grammatical errors in telling about unforgettable experience at MTsN Durian Tarung Padang was 60.71% of sample members (32 students). In specific, 30 students (93.75%) had grammatical errors and 2 students (6.25%) had no grammatical errors in using verb forms, 27 students (84.37%) had grammatical errors and 5 students (15.63%) had no grammatical errors in using subject verb/be agreement, 13 students (40.62%) had grammatical errors and 19 students (59.38%) had no grammatical errors in using articles, 19 students (59.37%) had grammatical errors and 13 students (40.63%) had no grammatical errors in using preposition, 16 students (50%) had grammatical errors and 16 students (50%) had no grammatical errors in using pluralization, 10 students (31.25%) had grammatical errors and 22 students (68.75%) had no grammatical errors in using pronoun, 21 students (65.62%) had grammatical errors and 11 students (34.38%) had no grammatical errors in using conjunction. Based on the result of this result, the researcher concluded that the second year students at MTsN Durian Tarung Padang had grammatical errors in telling unforgettable experience. Dealing with the conclusion, the researcher suggests the teachers to explain and give more exercises about verb forms, subject verb/be agreement, articles, preposition, pluralization, pronoun, and conjunction. The students are suggested to learn and practice more about verb forms, subject verb/be agreement, articles, preposition, pluralization, pronoun, and conjunction. The next researchers are expected to do further research on problem faced by students in speaking about unforgettable experience.
