Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the second year students’ speaking ability in asking and giving opinions at SMAN 7 Padang. The design of this research was descriptive. The total population was 274 students, distributed into nine classes, 7 classes of MIA and 2 classes of IIS. The researcher used stratified cluster random sampling in taking the sample and the XI MIA 1 and XI IIS 1 were used as research sample, the two classes consisted of 64 students. But, there was one student who did not come that day, so there were 63 students as research sample. To collect the data the researcher used speaking test. In analyzing the data the researcher used some steps: the first the researcher presented the raw scores. The second was calculating the mean and standard deviation. The third was classifying the students’ ability. The fourth was calculating the percentage of the students’ ability. Generally, the mean score 11.63 and standard deviation 2.34. The result of the data analysis showed that the students were classified into moderate in speaking ability especially in asking and giving opinions. In general, that there were 14 students (22.22%) classified into high ability, 36 students (57.14%) classified into moderate ability and 13 students (20.54%) classified into low ability Based on the result of this research, the researcher gives suggestions to the teacher, students and the next researchers. Since the result of research that students’ speaking ability in asking and giving opinion is moderate. English teachers are suggested to improve their students’ speaking ability in asking and giving opinion through giving more practice speaking especially asking and giving opinions. Referring to the result of research that they have moderate ability in asking and giving opinion, the students are expected to improve their speaking ability in asking and giving opinion into high ability through practicing speaking in asking and giving opinion.The researcher has done to study about the students’ speaking ability in asking and giving opinion and the result showed that the students’ ability is moderate, but the researcher has not yet studied the factors that cause their ability is moderate. So, it is suggested to another researcher to study about the factors that make their ability moderate.
