Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the student’s ability in writing a descriptive text at SMPN 1 Linggo Sari Baganti. The design of this research was descriptive design. The population of the research was the eigth garade student’s of at SMPN 1linggo Sari Baganti. The number of population members of this research 129 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample and the number was 31 students. The instrument used to get the data was writing test. The researcher found out that the realibility index of the test was very high(0.99). It mean the instrument is realiable see Appendix 4. The data of this research were students’ scores in writing a descriptive text. The result of the data analysis showed that students ability in writing a descriptive text at SMPN 1 Linggo Sari Baganti was member moderate. It was proved by the fact that there were 6 students (19.35 %) who had high ability, 20 students (64.51 %) had moderate ability , 5 students (16,12 %) had low ability See Appendix 8. The result of the data analysis indicated that students ability in writing indentifiction and description of descriptive text at SMPN 1 Linggo Sari Bangati was moderate. It was proved that 18 students (58,06 % ) at moderate ability see Appendix 12. The result of the data analisys of the students ability in using language features was moderate . It was proved that 20 students ( 64,51%) had moderate ability see Appendix 16. The result of teh data analisys students’ ability in using vocabulary was moderate. It was proved 23 students (74,19%) had moderate ability see Appendix 20. From The data analisys students’ ability in using mechanic was moderate. It was proved that 19 students (61.94%) had moderate ability see Appendix 24. It means that most students could do writing test, but some students had problem in the writing descriptive text. Finaly, by having known the students’ ability in writing a descriptive text, the writer gives suggestion to the students to more practice and they pay more attention to the components in writing a descriptive text.
