Abstract
Writing is one of the important skills that should be mastered by English learners since writing has a role of delivering the message in communication between the writers and the readers. This research was aimed to describe the ability of the second grade students of SMAN 1 Nan Sabaris Padang Pariaman in writing an analytical exposition text. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMAN 1 Nan Sabaris. The number of the population members were 272 students. They were divided in two strata (Exact science and Social science). They were distributed into four classes for Exact science and four classes for Social science. The number of sample members were 54 students from eleven Exact science 1 class and eleven social science 2. The researcher used stratified cluster random sampling in taking the sample. In collecting data, the researcher used writing test. The researcher used inter-rather technique to find the reliability of the test. It was found that the coefficient of correlation ofthe test was .97 (see Appendix 4). Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher found that the ability of the second grade students of SMAN 1 Nan Sabaris Padang Pariaman in writing an analytical exposition text was moderate (see Appendix 8). In details, their ability in writing thesis statement was moderate, their ability in writing arguments was moderate, their ability in writing reiteration was moderate. Their ability in using language feaures was moderate, their ability in using appropriate vocabulary was moderate, and their ability in applying mechanics was moderate. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the ability of the second grade students of SMAN 1 Nan Sabaris Padang Pariaman in writing an analytical exposition text was moderate. In accordance with the conclusion, English teachers at SMAN 1 Nan Sabaris Padang Pariaman are suggested to give more explanation about how to write an analytical exposition text and give more exercises to the students. The students are expected to practice much harder in writing an analytical exposition text in the future. Furthermore, the researcher suggests to the next researcher to study about some factors that cause the students’ ability in writing an analytical exposition text was moderate.
