Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the first year students’ listening ability to comprehend conversation. In this research, the population was the first year student of SMAN 1 Kecamatan Lareh Sago Halaban. The number of the population members was 261 students. The size of the sample was 58 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to get representative sample. The instrumentation used to get the data was listening test in the form of multiple choice. Before the researcher gave real listening test to the sample, the test was tried out. To know the reliability index of the test, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment formula. It was found that the reliability of the test was .65. The listening ability of the first year student SMAN 1 Kec. Lareh Sago Halaban in comprehending conversation was moderate. It is proved by the fact that there were 10 students (17.68%) had high ability, 41 (70.68%) students had moderate ability, 7 students (12.06%) had low ability. The listening ability ofthe first year student of SMAN 1 Kec. Lareh Sago Halaban in comprehending topic was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 5 students (08.62%) had high ability, 40 students (68.96%) had moderate ability, and 13 students (22.89%) had low ability. The listening ability of the first year student of SMAN 1 Kec. Lareh Sago Halaban in comprehending participant was moderate. It is proved by the fact that 7 students (12.06%) had high ability, 40 students (68.96%) had moderate ability, and 11 students (18.96%) had low ability. The listening ability of the first year student of SMAN 1 Kec. Lareh Sago Halaban in comprehending situation was moderate. It is proved by the fact that 11 students (18.96%) had high ability, 41 students (70.68%) had moderate ability, and 6 students (10.34%) had low ability. The listening ability of the first year student of SMAN 1 Kec. Lareh Sago Halaban to comprehend setting was moderate. It is proved by the fact that 3 students (5.17%) had high ability, 41 students (70.69%) had moderate ability, and 14 students (24.13%) who had ability. The findings of this research lead the researcher to conclude that the first year students of SMAN 1 Kec. Lareh Sago Halaban had moderate ability in listening to comprehend conversation. In line with such conclusion, the researcher suggests to first year students of SMAN 1 Kec. Lareh Sago Halaban to comprehend conversation with more practice. The teachers are suggested to give more exercise to the students to comprehend conversation especially in topic, participant, situation and setting. In addition, to further researcher to do further research on problem faced in comprehending conversation in term of topic, participant, situation and setting.
