Grammatical Errors Made by the Second Year Students in Writing an Announcement Text at SMAN 6 Padang

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second year students’ grammatical errors in writing an announcement text at SMA N 6 Padang. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The number of population was 268 students. The researcher used stratified random sampling to select the sample and the total number of sample members was 60 students. The instrument used to get the data was writing test. The students were asked to write an announcement text. It was found that the reliability index of the test was very high (.96). It means that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity. The result of this research showed that in general the first year students of SMA N 6 Padang had no grammatical errors in writing announcement text. It was proved by the finding that 43 students (70.7%) had no errors and 17 students (29.3%) had errors. In detail, 26 students (45.5%) had errors and 34 students (54.45%) had no errors in the form of omission, 7 students (11.67%) had errors and 53 students (88.33%) had no errors in the form of addition, 32 students (53.33%) had errors and 28 students (46.67%) had no errors in the form of misformation, 4 students (6.65%) had errors and 56 students (93.35%) had no errors in the form of misordering, Referring to the result of this research, the researcher concluded that the second year students of SMA N 6 Padang had no grammatical errors in writing an announcement text. Dealing with the conclusion, the researcher suggested to the teachers to explain and give more exercise about announcement text. The students are suggested to study harder and learn more about announcement text, especially in writing plural form, verb form and preposition of announcement text. The researcher assumed that, the types of grammatical errors which made by the students is caused by the influence of first language and second language of the students. The students have not ever studied about plural form, verb form, and preposition in their first language and second language. That is why, most of the students had grammatical errors in plural form, verb form, and preposition.
