Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the second year students’ ability of English Department in Bung Hatta University to make inferences in Reading News Item Text, especially about the generic structure. The design of this research was descriptive. The total number of population of this research was 56 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique in taking the sample, because there were two classes of the second year at English Department in Bung Hatta University. Each class consisted of 28 students, and the researcher took one class as the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used reading test. In this test, the students chose the correct answer. The instrument was tried out in advance. The coefficient correlation of instrument was 0.47 (see Appendix 8). In analyzing the data based on the result of reading test, the researcher presented raw score and the calculated the students’ score, classified the students who get high, moderate and low ability. Finally, the researcher counted the percentage of students’ ability to make inferences in reading news item text. The result of this research showed that in general the students’ ability to make inferences at the second year of English Department, Bung Hatta University in reading news item text was moderate. It was proved, that 62.5 % students had moderate ability (see Appendix 15). In detail, the students’ ability to make inferences the main event of news item text was moderate. It was proved, that 75 % of students had moderate ability (see Appendix 17). Students’ ability to make inferences the elaboration of news item text was moderate. It was proved, that 58.33 % of students had moderate ability (see Appendix 19). And students’ ability to make inferences the resources of news item text was moderate. It was proved, that 62.5 % of students had moderate ability (see Appendix 21). Since the students’ ability to make inferences in reading news item text at English Department of Bung Hatta University was moderate, the researcher suggested to the lecturers at English Department to review the material about inferences, especially in reading news item text. For the students, the researcher suggested to learn more about the kinds of text, especially news item text and they are expected to read more news item text as the daily activity. The researcher suggested to the next researchers to find out other relevant aspects to make inferences in reading news item text. For example, it is important to investigate the problem faced by the students to make inferences in reading news item text.
