Abstract

( 2015) “. Advisors : 1. Dra. Fatimah Tanjung, M.Hum. : 2. Drs. Khairul, M.Sc. The purpose of the research was to describe students’ ability in speaking, especially the ability to express how to do things. The design of the research was descriptive design. The population of the research was the ninth grade students of SMPN 1 Lunang, Pesisir Selatan. The number of population members of the research was 178 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample, and the number of sample was 25 students. The instrument used to get the data was speaking test. The researcher found out that the reliability index of the test was very high (0.98). It means that the instrument was reliable. The result of the research showed that in general, the ability of the ninth grade students’ ability to express how to do things at SMPN 1 Lunang, Pesisir Selatan was moderate. It was proved by the finding that was 24 students (96%) had moderate ability. The ability of the ninth grade students’ ability to express how to do things in category of content at SMPN 1 Lunang, Pesisir Selatan was moderate. It was proved by the finding that was 20 students (80%) had moderate ability. The ability of the ninth grade students’ ability to express how to do things in using appropriate grammar at SMPN 1 Lunang, Pesisir Selatan was moderate. It was proved by the finding that was 17 students (68%) had moderate ability. The ability of the ninth grade students’ ability to express how to do things in using appropriate vocabulary at SMPN 1 Lunang, Pesisir Selatan was moderate. It was proved by the finding that was 19 students (76%) had moderate ability. The ability of the ninth grade students’ ability to express how to do things to speak fluently at SMPN 1 Lunang, Pesisir Selatan was moderate. It was proved by the finding that was 13 students (52%) had moderate ability. The ability of the ninth grade students’ ability to express how to do things in pronouncing word at SMPN 1 Lunang, Pesisir Selatan was moderate. It was proved by the finding that was 16 sudents (64%) had moderate ability. Referring to the result of ther research, the researcher concludes that the ability of the ninth grade students at SMPN 1 Lunang, Pesisir Selatan was moderate. Dealing with the conclusion, the researcher proposed several suggestions. First, for the teachers, they should give more explanations about speaking. Beside that, teachers also explain how to use content, approriate word, correct grammar, correct pronounciation, and to speak fluently. Second, for the students, they should learn more about how to do thing and how to use mechanics in speaking.
