Abstract

This study aimed to find out the errors made by the second grade students at SMPN 2 Padang in transforming affirmative sentences to negative and interrogative sentences in simple present tense. The population of this research was the second grade students at SMPN 2 Padang. The member of the population was 249 students. The researcher took 31 students (class VIII.1) as the sample. In selecting sample, the researcher used cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to get the data was grammar test. The researcher found the reliability of the test by using inter-rater method. It was found that the coefficient correlation was very high (.94). It means that the result of the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in terms of content validity. The data of this study were the second grade students’ grammatical errors in transforming affirmative sentences to negative and interrogative sentences in simple present tense. The result showed that the students made four types of grammatical errors. They were omission, addition, misinformation, and misordering. It was proved that 32.48% errors were made by the students in transforming affirmative sentences to negative sentences. Specifically, there were 50.42% errors in terms of omission, 27.94% errors were in terms of addition, 17.38% errors were in terms of misinformation, and 4.26% were errors in terms of misordering. Then, there were 30% errors made by the students in transforming affirmative sentences to yes/ no questions. Specifically, there were 23.98% errors in terms of omission, 31.55% errors were in terms of addition, 42.44% errors were in terms of misinformation, and 2.03% errors were in terms of misordering. Finally, there were 37.52% errors made by the students in transforming affirmative sentences to WH-questions. Specifically, there were 36.73% errors were in terms of omission, 27.43% errors were in terms of addition, 35.84% errors were in terms of misinformation, and 0% error was in terms of misordering. The most serious grammatical errors made by the students were omission in transforming affirmative sentences to WH-question and the less serious grammatical errors were misordering in transforming affirmative sentences to negative and inteerogative sentences. Based on the result above, the researcher gives suggestion to both teacher and students. The teacher is suggested to pay attention to the grammar when they teach about transforming affirmative sentences to negative and interrogative form. The students should study and pay more attention to the rules (grammar) in transforming affirmative sentences to negative and interrogative sentences.
