Abstract

This research was attempted to describe the first year students difficulties in comprehending spoof text at SMAN 4 Pariaman. The design of this research was descriptive. The members of population of this research were 341. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique in taking the sample since the students were distributed into nine classes and all members of population are homogeneous. The researcher got one class as the sample and one class consist of 40 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used reading test. From the result of the try out, the researcher found that the degree of coefficient correlation of the try out was 0.83 (see Appendix 4). After analyzing the data, it was found that most of the first year students of SMAN 4 Pariaman had difficulties in comprehending spoof text text. They had difficulties in comprehending orientation, events and twist. It was indicated by the fact that; 67.57% (see appendix 16) students had difficulties in comprehending orientation, 62.17% (see Appendix 18) students had difficulties in comprehending events, and 51.36% (see Appendix 20) students had difficulties in comprehending twist. Based on the findings of this research, it can be concluded that the first year students of SMAN 4 Pariaman had difficulties in comprehending spoof text. By having known the students’ difficulties in comprehending spoof text, the english teachers are expected to improve students skills in comprehending spoof text by giving more exercises to the students that can minimize students’ difficulties in comprehending orientation, complication and resolution of narrative text. Besides, he suggests the students to do more exercise about reading spoof text and all aspects about spoof text.
