Abstract

This study was designed to describe the difficulties of the third students in using adverb clauses in the complex sentences at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Specifically, it aimed at describing the students’ difficulties in using adverb clause of time and opposition in the complex sentences. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the third year students of English Department of FKIP Bung Hatta University in academic year 2014/2015 that have passed Structure I, II, III, IV, and Advanced Structure. Total number of population was 80 students and they were divided into three classes. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique in order to select the sample. She took seventeen students (class B) as the sample of the test in this research. The researcher used writing test. The writing test was administered to collect the data of the third year students’ difficulties in using adverb clause of time and opposition in the complex sentences. In data analysis, the highest score in using adverb clause of time and opposition was 81 and the lowest score was 40. Specifically, the highest score in using adverb clause of time in the complex sentences was 41 and the lowest score was 13. The highest score in using adverb clause of opposition in the complex sentences was 44 and the lowest score was 17. In general, the result of analysis showed that 58.82% of the students had difficulties in using adverb clause of time and opposition in the complex sentences. Specifically, it showed that 58.82% of students had difficulties in using adverb clause of time in the complex sentences and 58.82% of students had difficulties in using adverb clause of opposition in the complex sentences. Based on the research findings above, the researcher suggests to the English lecturers to review the material and give more explanations and exercises which focus on using adverb clause of time and opposition in order to lead the students’ comprehension in this subject. For students, they are suggested to learn more about how to write complex sentences basically, and how to use adverb clause of time and opposition in the complex sentences. For further researchers, the researcher suggests to do the research in finding out what the causes or factors that make students had difficulties in using adverb clause of time and opposition in the complex sentences.
