Abstract

This study was aimed to find out whether there is a correlation between students’ motivation and their English achievement of the second grade students at SMPN 2 Pariaman. This study used a correlation design and had two variables, namely: motivation and English achievement. This study was conducted using sample of second grade students at SMPN 2 Pariaman. The samples were 30 students from class VIII. 6 who were selected randomly from the population of 281 students of second grade students at SMPN 2 Pariaman. Meanwhile, the instruments to collect data are questionnaire and achievement test. The questionnaire was used to collect data of students’ motivation and the achievement test used to collect data of students’ English Achievement. The result of the data analysis that the value of r-calculated in this research was (.63) (see Appendix 16) with the level significant 95% (α.05) and the degree of freedom (df) n – 2 (28) the value of r-table was (.36) (see Appendix 16). It means that the r-calculated (.63) (see Appendix 16) was higher than r-table (.36) (see Appendix 16). Therefore, the relationship between students’ motivation and their English achievement was significant. Then, the alternative hypothesis that said “there is significant correlation between students’ motivation and their English achievement of second grade students at SMPN 2 Pariaman” was accepted. As stated before, the index coefficient correlation was 0.63 (see Appendix 16). In relation to the classification of the correlation could be classified as high correlation. The index of coefficien of determination of the study was 0.40. It means that the motivation only distibute as much as 40% to the students’ English achievement. While, 60% of students English achievement is determined by other variables. Learning from the result, it can be concluded that the correlation between students’ motivation and their English achievement of the second grade students at SMPN 2 Pariaman was high with score 0.63 (see Appendix 16). Therefore, the researcher suggested to the English teacher to help the students find the effective factors in teaching and learning process, in order to increase students’ English achievement, the students should improve the motivation if they want to have a good mastery of English, and for further researcher to add the other variables which related to the students’ English achievement.
