Abstract
This research was aimed at describing the second year students’ ability in writing brochure at MTsN Kuranji Padang. In writing brochure, students should consider 4 aspects, they are organizing ideas (title, content and contact person), using grammar, using vocabulary and using mechanic. The design of this research was descriptive. The total number of population of this researcher was 338 in ten classes. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique in taking the sample. From 10 classes, the researcher took 2 classes (20%) of the population as the sample randomly. The total member of populatian were 64 students. To make the test reliable, the writer tried out the test. It was found that the reliability index of the test was .70 (high) (see appendix 5). It means the test was reliable. Then the test was valid in terms of content validity. In collecting the data, the researcher used writing test. In this test, the students could choose one of the topics that they liked most. In analyzing the data based on the result of writing test, the writer presented the raw score, then counted the average score from two scorer, calculated the mean and standard deviations, classified the students who got high, moderate, or low ability and finally, calculated the percentage of the students’ ability. From the result of the study, the researcher found that the ability of the second year students of MTsN Kuranji Padang in writing brochures was moderate. It was indicated by the percentage of students (81.25%) whose ability fell in this category. In details, their ability in organizing ideas in writing brochures was moderate. It was indicated by the percentage of students (43.75%) whose ability fell in this category. Their ability in using grammar in writing brochures was moderate. It was indicated by the percentage of students (79.69%) whose ability fell in this category. Their ability in using vocabulary was moderate. It was indicated by the percentage of students (79.69%) whose ability fell in this category and their ability in using mechanic was moderate. It was indicated by the percentage of students (75%) whose ability fell in this category.
