Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the students’ ability at MTsN Model Padang in writing Greeting card. The population of this research was the second grade students of MTsN Model Padang. The number of population members was 433 students. They were divided into twelve classes. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to get sample of this thesis, because, the students are homogeneous. The researcher took three classes of twelve classes. The samplemembers were 109 students consisting of VIII 9, VIII 10 and VIII 11 classes. The data of this study were students’ ability in greeting card. It was focused in writing content, language features, vocabulary and mechanics of greeting card. The data was collected by using writing test. Before the researcher gave writing test to the sample, the test was tried out. To know the reliability of the test the researcher used inter-rater technique, to minimize subjectivity in giving scoreand too see the validity of the test the researcher look at at curriculum at the MTsN Model Padang. It was found that the coefficient correlation was high (0.76; See Appendix 5). It means that the result of the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity. The result of the data showed that the eighth grade students’ ability in writing greeting card at MTsN Model Padang was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 77 students (70.64%; See Appendix 11 ) had moderate ability. The ability of the student in writing organized idea of greeting card at MTsN Model Padang was moderate. It was proved by the fact 78 students (71.55%; See Appendix 16) had moderate ability. The ability of the students in writing language features was moderate. It was proved by the fact 67 students (61.46%; See Appendix 19) had moderate ability. The ability of the students in using vocabulary was moderate. It proved by the fact 89 students (81.65%; See Appendix 23) had moderate ability. The ability of students in using mechanics was moderate. It proved by the fact 81 students (74.31%; See Appendix 27) had moderate ability. Based on findings that have already discussed previously, it could be concluded that the ability of the second grade students of MTsN Model Padang was moderate. The researcher suggests the students to practice their writing especially in greeting card to increase their ability in writing greeting card. If they practice more, they will have good writing ability. To the English teachers, the researcher suggests to give more exercises for students related to writing greeting card.
