Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second year students‟ ability in writing greeting card at UPT SMPN 3 Rambatan, Kecamatan Rambatan- Batusangkar. The design of this research was descriptive. The number of population of this research was 100 students. They were divided into three classes (VIII.1, VIII.2 and VIII.3). The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to get sample of this research because the students are homogeneous. The researcher took one class of three classes. The sample members were 34 students consisting of one class. In collecting data, the researcher used writing test. It was focused in writing greeting card. To know the reliability of the test, the researcher used interrater technique, to see minimize the subjectivity in giving score used the MCS at UPT SMPN 3 Rambatan Kecamatan Rambatan-Batusangkar. It was found that the coefficient correlation of the test was 0. 93 (Very high correlation). It means the test was reliable. Then the test was valid in term of content validity because the test was constructed based on curriculum, syllabus and teaching materials at UPT SMPN 3 Rambatan Kecamatan Rambatan-Batusangkar. Based on findings discussed previously, it could be concluded that the ability of the second year students at UPT SMPN 3 Rambatan Kecamatan Rambatan-Batusangkar was high. Referring to the ability classification, 24 students (67.65%) had high ability and 10 students (32.35%) had low ability. In detail, their ability in writing addressee of greeting card was low (17.65%). Their UNIVERSITAS BUNG HATTA ability in writing body of greeting card was high (73.52%) and their ability in writing sender of greeting card was fifty-fifty. Since the result of the study showed that the students‟ ability in writing greeting card in general was high, the researcher suggests the students to practice their writing especially in writing addressee and sender of since the students have low ability in writing addressee and sender of greeting card. If they have more practice, they will have good writing ability. To the English teacher, they are suggested to give more explanation and exercises in order to help the students to improve ability in writing greeting card especially in writing addressee and sender of greeting card.
