Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ ability in using mechanic in writing English essay. The population of this research was the third year students at the English Education Department of Bung Hatta University. The total number of sample was 24 students. They were chosen by using total sampling technique. The data were collected through writing test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater method. It means that were two scorers to check the students answer sheet. It was found that the correlation coefficient was 1.00. It means that the test was reliable (see Appendix 4). Then the test was valid in terms of content validity. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability in using mechanic in writing English essay at English Education Department Bung Hatta University in general was very good. It was proved by the finding that 83% students had very good ability. In specific, the third year students’ wrtiting ability to express period was very good. It was proved by the finding that 100% students had very good ability. The third year students’ writing ability to use comma was very good. It was proved by the finding that 87% students had very high ability. The third year students’ ability to use capitalization was good. It was proved by the finding that 58% students had very high ability. Referring to the results of this research, the researcher concludes that the ability of the third year students’ ability in using mechanic in writing English essay was very good. Dealing with the conclusion, lecturers are suggested to maintain students’ ability and also improve it. The students are suggested to do practice more especially in capitalization because the students had lower ability. At least the researcher suggested other researchers to improve the students’ ability in using capitalization.
