ABSTRACT Putri, W. L. 2021. An Analysis of Students’ Grammatical Problems in Writing an Analytical Exposition Text in Class XI IPS at SMA Negeri 3 Pariaman Advisors: 1. Dr. Lely Refnita, M.Pd. 2. Fitrina Harmaini, S.S., M.A. The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ grammatical problems in writing an analytical exposition text in class XI IPS at SMA Negeri 3 Pariaman. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The population of this research was class IX IPS at SMA Negeri 3 who registered in the academic year 2020/2021. The researcher used convenience sampling technique and the sample chosen was class XI IPS 1 that contained 35 students. Instrument for collecting the data in this research was writing test in the form of writing analytical exposition text. To make the test reliable the researcher used inter-rater technique. The result of analysis showed that the test was reliable. It was supported by the fact that the coefficient correlation was 0.86. It was categorized as very high correlation. Then the test was valid in terms of content because it had covered the material that students had learnt. Generally, all of the students of class XI IPS 1 at SMA 3 had grammatical problems in writing an analytical exposition text. The number of students who had problems in using simple present tense was 80%, all of the students had problems in using passive voice (100%), and the number of students who had problems in using causal conjunction was 74.3%. By having known that the students had grammatical problems in writing an analytical exposition text, the researcher gives suggestions to teachers, and the future researchers. The teachers should do their best to make students understand simple present tense, passive voice and causal conjunction well. The next researchers are expected to investigate how students can have problem in simple present tense, passive voice and causal conjunction.
