Abstract

ABSTRACT Eisya, Nadira Arindra Rahma. 2021.An Analysis of the Fourth Year Students’ Ability in Translating Business Letter from English into Indonesian at English Department of Bung Hatta University.Thesis. English Department, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Bung Hatta University. Advisors : 1. Lailatul Husna, S.Pd.,M.Pd. 2.Dra. Lisa Tavriyanti, M.Pd This research was aimed to describe the fourth year students’ ability in translating business letter from English into Indonesian at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the fourth year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University.The total sample members were 20 students. They were chosen by using total sampling technique. The data were collected through Translation Test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater method. It means that there were two scorers to check the students’ translation. The correlation coefficient of two scores was 0,82 (Very High Correlation). It means that the test was reliable. The result of data analysis showed that the students had very good ability in translating a business letter from English into Indonesian. Generally, 17 students (85%) had very good ability, 3 students (15%) had good ability, 0 student (0%) moderate ability and 0 student (0%) had low ability (See Appendix 6). Specifically, the result of the research showed that students’ability in using lexical equivalence in translating business letter was very good. It was proved by fact that 20 students (100%) had very good ability (See Appendix 8). Students’ ability in using grammatical adjustmentin translating a business letter was good. It was proved by fact that 11 students (55%) had good ability, 8 students (40%) had very good ability, 1 student (5%) had moderate ability, and 0 student (0%) had low ability. (see Appendix 10). Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the fourth year students’ ability in translating business letter from English into Indonesian at the English Department of Bung Hatta University was very good. Related to this, the students should maintain their ability in using lexical equivalence and improve their ability in grammatical adjustment. The lecturers are suggested togive more exercises to make their ability more increasingly in translating the business letter and build up their understanding about grammatical rules of the business letter.
