Abstract

ABSTRACT Akmal, DidiKisra.2021.The second year students’ ability to describe their traditional food at english department of bung hatta university Advisors : 1. Dra.Ernati, M.Pd. 2.Dr. Lely Refnita, M.Pd. The aim of this research was to describe the second year students’ ability to describe their traditional food at English department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this researchwas descriptive research. The population of this research was the second year students at English Language Education Study Program of Bung Hatta University. The number of population was 36 students. The sample of this research was chosen by using total sampling technique. The data were collected through speaking test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater method. It means that there were two scorers to check the students’ speaking performance. The correlation coefficient of two scores was 0.64 (high correlation). It means that the test was reliable. The result of this research showed that the students’ speaking ability to describe the traditional food at English Department of Bung HattaUniversity was very good. In general, the students’ speaking ability to describe the traditional food was classified into very good ability. It was found that 75% students got very good ability. In specific, the students’ speaking ability indescribing content was very good. It was proved by finding that 80,56% students had very good ability. The second year students ability in pronouncing words was classified into very good ability. It was proved by finding that 100% students had very good ability. The second year students had a problem in using grammar. It was found that 63,90% students had low ability. The second year students’ fluency in speaking ability was classified into very good ability. It was proved by finding that 88,88% students had very good ability. Furthermore, the students’ ability in using vocabulary was classified into very good ability. It was proved by finding that 94,44% students had very good ability. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the second year students’ speaking ability to describe their traditional food at English Department of Bung Hatta University was very good. Therefore, the lecturers were suggested to give enrichment for students, in order that the students’ speaking ability will improved, the students are suggested to give more exercises to improve the students’ speaking ability in using grammar and for the furthermore research was suggested to research problem of the students’ ability in using correct grammar. .
