Abstract

Patriarchal culture has been a problem for the country that used the ideology of the patriarchal system for a long time. This usually happens to women and girls in a disadvantaged position because of their lack of financial and educational capacity, their status, and dependence on men. This study aims to analyze the case of the resistance of women toward oppression on patriarchal culture in The Testaments by Margaret Atwood. The novel depicts the resistance of female characters who experience women oppression in patriarchal culture. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of patriarchal culture toward women and the resistance of women to it using the theory of feminism. The writer uses qualitative methods by applying close reading techniques to obtain a complete understanding of the data. The results revealed that patriarchal culture in the workplace that is in occupation and position and rule then patriarchal culture at home includes making decision and violence. Women did the resistance in the form of speaking out, giving support, smuggled out and breaking the rule. Patriarchal culture where men is superior and women inferior is an unpleasant treatment that puts disadvantages the women in many conditions in the patriarchal system in Republic of Gilead.
