Abstract

ABSTRACT Azkiya, Maretha. 2021. “The Second Year Students’ Ability in Writing Simple Sentences Using Comparative Adverbs at the English Department of Bung Hatta University Padang.” Advisor I : Dra. Lisa Tavriyanti, M.Pd. Advisor II : Dr. Lely Refnita, M.Pd. The purpose of this research is to describe the ability of the second year students in writing simple sentences using comparative adverbs at the English Department of Bung Hatta University Padang. The design of this research was descriptive in nature. The population of this research was the second year students of the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total number of this population was 36 students and all of them were chosen as the research sample. The instrument of this research was writing test and its reliability index was 0.96, indicating that the test was reliable. The test was also valid in terms of its content because it covered the intended materials. Based on the result of analyzing the data, it was found that in general the second year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University Padang had moderate ability in writing simple sentences using comparative adverbs. It was indicated by the fact that 3 students (8.33%) had very good ability, 6 students (16.67%) had good ability, 15 students (41.67%) had moderate ability and 12 students (33.33%) had low ability. By having known the students’ ability in writing simple sentences using comparative adverbs, the researcher gave suggestions to lecturers, the students and further researcher. The lecturers are suggested to give motivation to the students to do more exercises in writing simple sentences. The students are suggested to read and do more exercises of comparative adverbs to improve their ability. The next researchers are suggested to do research related to writing comparative adverbs because there are many aspects of writing skill problems that have to be researched.
