Abstract

It is important to have an ability in writing conditional sentences because every type of conditional sentences conveys different meaning. Moreover, conditional sentences are also studied in Grammar subject. The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ ablity in writing conditional sentences based on the provided cases at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The researcher used descriptive design in the research. The population of the research was the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University.The number of the population members was 23 students. They were grouped in one class. The researcher used total sampling technique. The instrument used in collecting data was writing sentence test. The researcher used content validity and used inter-rater reliability by using two scorers. The researcher found the reliability index of the test was 0.95 (very reliable). In general, the result of the data analysis showed that in writing conditional sentence based on the provided cases17.4% of the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University had very good ability, 56.5% of students had good ability, 8.7% of students had moderate ability and 17.4% of students had low ability. Specifically, in writing conditional sentence type I (possible situationin the future) based on the provided cases the majority of students (47.82%) had very good ability, in writing conditional sentence type II (the hypothetical situation) based on the provided casesthe majority of students (39.13%) had very good ability, and in writing conditional sentence type III (unreal situation in the past) based on the provided casesthe majority of students (47.83%) had moderate ability. Related to the findings, it could be concluded that the students’ ability in writing conditional sentences based on the provided cases of English Department of Bung Hatta University was good. Based on the conclusion, the researcher suggests the lecturer to give more various exercises in writing conditional sentence especially in conditional sentence type III. To improve ability in writing conditional sentences, the students should do more exercises, and the students must know the tenses used for each type of conditional sentences and the meaning of the sentences. And the next researcher can use the result of this research as a source to do the research related with this topic.
