Abstract

ABSTRACT Fatimatuzzahra. R. 2021. The Second Year Students Listening Ability to Comprehend Short Dialogue at English Department of Bung Hatta University Advisor: Dr. Joni Alfino, S.Pd., M.Pd. The purpose of this research was to describe the second year students’ listening ability to comprehend short dialogue at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The researcher used descriptive method for this research. The population of this research was the second year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University in the academic year 2020/2021. The researcher used total sampling technique to select the sample, and the number of sample was 37 students. Instrument for collecting the data in this research was listening test designed in term of multiple choice. It was focused on listening to comprehend short dialogue. The test was adopted from the book of practice Exercises for the TOEFL. Based on the discussion of researcher and her advisor, it was found that the test could be used to collect research data. The researcher found the reliability index using split half method, Pearson Product Moment Formula and Spearman Brown Formula. It was reliable and it could be used of this research. It was supported by the fact that the reability cooficient of the test was 0.79 It was High Correlation based on Arikunto’s idea. Then the test was valid in terms of content because it had covered all materials that students had learnt. The result of this research showed that listening ability of the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University to comprehend short dialogue was low. It was proved by the fact that 14 students (37.84 %) students had low ability. In detail, 15 students (40.54%) had very high ability to identifying the topic, 23 students (62.16%) had low ability to recognizing suggestion. By having known that the students had low ability to comprehend short dialogue, the researcher gives some suggestions to lecturers, students, and the future researchers. For the lectures, they are suggested to give more exercise to students in recognizing suggestion by using audio to improve their students’ listening ability. For students, they are suggested to improve their ability in listening in comprehending short dialogue especially in recognizing suggestion since the findings showed that students ability was low. It can be done by doing more practice to listening to short dialogue. For the further researchers, the researcher hopes that they can conduct a study to investigate how students can have low ability in recognizing suggestion of short dialogue.
