Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ ability in writing complex sentence by using adjective clause. The population of this research was the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total number of population was 23 students. The instrument used to get data was writing sentence test in the form of writing complex sentence by using adjective clause. To have reliable data, the researcher used inter-rater technique. The result of analysis showed that the test was reliable. It was supported by the fact that the coefficient of correlation was .98. Then, the test had content validity because it had covered all materials which students had learnt. The result of the data analysis showed that the students’ ability in writing complex sentence by using adjective clause at English Department of Bung Hatta University was very good. It was proved by the fact that 14 students (61%) had very good ability, 8 students (35%) had good ability, 1 student (4%) had moderate ability and 0 students (0%) had low ability. In terms of writing complex sentence by using relative pronoun as subject, 14 students (61%) had very good ability, 8 students (35%) had good ability, 1 student (4%) had moderate ability and 0 students (0%) had low ability. In terms of writing complex sentence by using relative pronoun as object, 17 students (73.7%) had very good ability, 4 students (17.4%) had good ability, 1 student (4.35%) had moderate ability and 1 student (4.35%) had low ability. In terms of writing complex sentence by using relative pronoun as possessive, 12 students (52%) had very good ability, 10 students (44%) had good ability, 1 student (4%) had moderate ability and 0 students (0%) had low ability. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that ability of the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University was very good. In line with this conclusion, the researcher suggests the lecturers to review the material about adjective clause, especially in using relative pronoun as possessive because the result of this study indicated that the lowest percentage is in writing complex sentence by using relative pronoun as possessive, the researcher also suggests the UNIVERSITAS BUNG HATTA lecturers to emphasize the use of mechanism for students in writing and give more exercises in order to improve the students ability in writing complex sentence by using adjective clause. The students are suggested to do more exercises, especiallyfor the students who had moderate and low abilityto make students understand about complex sentence and adjective clause. The researcher also suggeststhe next researcher to analyze why the findings of this study are different from the previous study.
