Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the third year students’ ability in using affixes of word formation. The design of this research was descriptive. The researcher did this research in Padang at Bung Hatta University. The members of population of this research were 23. The researcher used total sampling technique because the number of population at the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University ais less than 100 person. So the researcher used all of the population as the sample of this research. The researcher used vocabulary test to collect the data. Before doing the real test, the researcher tried out of the test first. The reliability index was 0.88 or very high correlation. The items were 60, there were 27 items were revised, 21 items were discarded, and 12 items were accepted. In order to make all the research questions have same number test item. The researcher added one more test item for the research question number 4. The total items for the real test were 40. The researcher found that the students’ ability in using affixes of word formation was good. It was indicated by the fact that 10 students had good ability and the percentage was 43.48%. In more specific, the researcher found their ability in using affixes of word formation in noun formation was very good. It was proved by the fact that 12 students had very good ability and the percentage was 52.17%. Then their ability in using affixes of word formation in verb formation was bad. It was proved by the fact that 8 students had bad ability and the percentage was 34.78%. Their ability using affixes of word formation in verb formation was also bad. It was proved by the fact that 9 students had bad ability and the percentage was 39.13%. Last their ability using affixes of word formation in verb formation was also bad. It was proved by the fact that 9 students had bad ability and the percentage was 39.13%. Based on the findings, a simple conclusion could be drawn that the ability of the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in using affixes of word formation was good. The reseacher suggested to the lecturerto give more exercises about affixes to maintain their memories in vocabulary subject. For the students, they are suggested to learn more about the changing form and changing meaning of the new words that are created from word formation. The researcher suggested the next researcher to find out the difficulties of students in using affixes especially in noun formation, verb formation, adjective formation, and adverb formation, and then finding the way or alternative to solve the students’ problem in using affixes of word formation.
