Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out a correlation between the tenth grade students’ reading interest and their reading comprehension of recount text at SMAN 1 Siberut Selatan. The design of this research was correlation research, and it is one of quantitative research. The population of this research was the tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Siberut Selatan Kab. KepulauanMentawai, the members were 143. The researcher gave the try out for questionnaire in class X MIA3 the members were 32 students and the try out for reading test in class X MIA2 the members were 28 students. The total sample members were 46 students from science (class X MIA1) 26 students and social (class X IIS4) 20 students. In selecting sample, the researcher used stratified cluster random sampling technique. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that students’ reading interest was moderate and their reading comprehension of recount text was also moderate. In addition, he found that the value of coefficient correlation between students’ reading interest and their reading comprehension of recount text was 0,96 and r-counted was bigger than r-table (0,96>0,2907). It means there was significant positive correlation between students’ reading interest and their reading comprehension of recount text. Learning from result of this research concludes that there was a significant correlation between students’ reading interest and their reading comprehension of recount text at SMAN 1 Siberut Selatan. Related to the conclusion, this study suggested to the English teacher to improve students’ reading interest and their reading comprehension of recount text.
