Abstract

People have different styles of using language. one of them is code mixing. Indonesian-English code mixing is often used by teenagers because of the influence of social media such as YouTube, one of which is Fathia Izzati’s YouTube channel which contains code mixing. The purpose of this study is to determine the type of code mixing used and also to find out the types of code mixing. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. This research data is taken from all words or sentences containing code-mixing elements in the form of dialogue spoken by guestar on Fathia Izzati’s Youtube channel, then classifying them into 3 types of code-mixing based on Muysken’s theory (2000) and 7 types of code-mixing based on Hoffman’s theory (1991). The data of this research are all words and sentences containing code mixing in the form of dialogue spoken by participants on the Youtube channel. Based on data analysis, the results showed that there were 64 data, from the three types found, 42 data were classified as insertions, 12 data were alternations, and 10 data were categorized as congruent lexicalizations. For the results of the code-mixing function, the most dominant reason underlying the use of code-mixing is to talk about particular topic, namely 63 and 1 data to express group identity. In conclusion, the use of code mixing seems to automatically violate the rules of English and Indonesian in terms of grammatical errors, the form of the words made.
